Lymphatic Drainage Massage: What to Know Before Booking
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle technique used in some care plans for lymphoedema. It is not the same as a standard relaxation massage, and it is not appropriate for everyone or every symptom.
Before you book
Ask about the practitioner's relevant training and experience, what the appointment includes, and whether they recommend discussing your situation with a clinician first. If you have a diagnosed condition, recent surgery, infection, unexplained swelling or another health concern, check with your care team before treatment.
What to expect
For lymphoedema, a specialist may combine skin care, movement, compression and MLD as part of a personalized plan. The NHS explains that treatment should be guided by a specialist team.

Use the consultation to understand the appointment
Before booking, ask the practitioner to explain the approach in plain language. What training have they completed? What information do they need from you? What would make them recommend a clinical assessment instead of an appointment? Clear answers should help you understand the service, rather than pressure you into buying a package.
Tell them about relevant health conditions, recent procedures and current concerns. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis of your own. It is reasonable to say that you have a symptom you do not understand and need advice about the appropriate next step.
Keep the expectations realistic
A relaxation massage and specialist manual lymphatic drainage have different purposes. Ask how the advertised service relates to your reason for booking. Do not assume that a cosmetic before-and-after photograph predicts your experience or demonstrates treatment of a medical condition.
For diagnosed lymphoedema, the NHS describes specialist treatment that may include several components. A standalone wellness booking should not replace a plan made with your clinical team.
Leave with clear instructions
Ask whether there is any follow-up guidance and who to contact with a concern after the appointment. If a practitioner recommends a product, ask for its actual label and information rather than relying on a verbal description. Take time to decide whether it fits your circumstances.
